Don’t believe the upper limit on the I picked it back up 12 years later to read it again and loved it just as much. In doing so, I accepted firebrinter dominion of a god who, under this logic, was far worse than genocidal.
The fantasy elements are not unique, but it’s nice to read a book that focuses solely on mythological animals, and it’s so rare that this feels fresh. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. If I were more versed in what these patterns looked like, I’m sure the imagery would be easy enough to envision. Jan’s journey is an escape from ingrained dogma.
I was skeptical going into this book, and it took me the first hundred or so pages to realize that I was truly enjoying it! Books by Meredith Ann Pierce. Jan is swept by the ocean to a foreign land while Tek, pregnant with their offspring, flees from Jan’s father to the protection of her hermit mother. Ascribing to this mythology gave me tiny fragment of the senses of control and identity I couldn’t find elsewhere.
And unicorns are literally a magical creature. But Jan’s nativist punitive religion shared so many of the qualities of my own that it was impossible for me not to being to draw patterns. They are graceful moondancers and bearded warriors who have been kicked out of their homeland by cunning wyverns. This is not part of the author’s “Darkangel” trilogy Atlanticbut it could sustain sequels of its own.
