May 17, Yami rated it liked it Shelves: As I picked up the book, Trkyat wasn’t expecting it to be this good. I neigr definitely surprised by the ending. The story depicts beautiful country-side scenery of the Alps and the characters are well built in an intriguing way. Isaie was a mountain guide when he experienced a couple of traumatizing accidents that made him retire. After that, his mental health deteriorated as he struggled to give the remainder of his life purpose.
He lives with his younger brother, Marcellin, that he ceuil alone, in As I picked up the book, I wasn’t expecting it to be this good. He lives with his younger brother, Marcellin, that he raised alone, in a hamlet at the foot of the imposing mountains. Every day he would do his chores and think of his treasured flock of sheep.
La neige en deuil by Henri Troyat
He’s quite obsequious in regards to his younger brother as the latter is portrayed to be a bully of some sort and an emotional manipulator. Besides, the brothers have conflicting views on work ethics, life expectations, and values. Marcellin has been seeking ways to make fortune when a plane crashes on the mountaintop one reuil November night.
The plane mainly transported mail and had a few passengers who were thought to be dead. He comes up with the idea of plundering the wreck site and forces his elder brother to guide him through the impracticable trails towards the summit.
As they commence their escalation towards the top, Isaie begins to glimpse truth amid the foginess of his thoughts although the effort was excruciatingly arduous. I shouldn’t say anymore except for the fact that it was surprisingly good in a melancholic way. Quand l’amour fraternel se heurte au sens moral, le tout sur les hauts sommets alpins!
Comme toujours avec Troyat des personnages simples mais profonds. This isn’t Troyat’s greatest achievement, and it’s more a novella than a novel, but it’s a good example of his skill in characterization, scene-setting, and plot construction, with an ending part-predictable, part-surprising.
The jacket of my elderly paperback summarises: A poignant and terrible confrontation between two men, two sets of ideals, Written by a man who had surely spent time in the mountains [edit: I’d recommend it to reasonably advanced French learners; apart from some specialised mountaineering vocabulary, it’s short and engrossing enough to keep you interested, and Troyat’s classic, hyper-correct style is always a joy to read.
