I’ve always said it and I’ll say it again: I know that not everyone can afford such a luxury and the majority reads only in one language. However, following many personal experiences, I noticed that reading the translated version almost always spoils the whole experience. I really enjoyed reading this. Even though this may be not one of my favorite books, I have learned to appreciate good degant. This book made Romain Gary the only writer in the history to I’ve always said it and I’ll say it again: This book made Romain Gary the only writer in the history to win the Prix Goncourt twice.

I have never had any doubt about the writers with roots coming from the Russian soil. Somehow, they’re superior to others, in my opinion. The language of this book is so great that by the middle of it, you’re convinced that you’re reading a book written by a child. Well of course, a child would never write anything like that, but the way that some moments are captured and some expressions used is so unique, you just can’t help but wonder how the author thought of it. Aug 30, Katelyn Potter rated it it was amazing. A punch in the gut, heart wrenching account. Best book I’ve read in Oct 06, Justme rated it did not like it. Momo lives in an orphanage run by ex-prostitute Emild Rosa. At first sight, I was kind of excited to read this book; It seemed to be engaging and philosophic which is something that I like a lot with books but then As I continued to flip through the pages, I became more confused.

There was no actual plot to the book. I wanted something to happen but it just never did. It fel “The life before us” is a book that is narrated by Momo Mohammada ten-year-old Arab immigrant to France. I was bored during the reading, it repeats itself for spi many times. Momo in the orphanage, and getting out, and this continues to happen again and again. The characters were dull and not appealing.

I just waited for the end; Which was also poor in decant opinion. I do not recommend this book. Aiar was astounded to witness so many great reviews on the book. I kept thinking that maybe there was something lost with the translation but I doubt that it made the whole plot vanish.

Maybe someday I’ll be able to read it in French and find out myself. Jan 11, Aayla rated it it was amazing Shelves: The important question in this book: He doesn’t go to school, and he has a unique way of looking at things in life, so the narration was amusing to me. As the story went on, however, the narration style didn’t really change but the tone did, and the reader is forced to think about things lik The important question in this auar As the story went on, however, the narration style didn’t really change but the tone did, and the reader is forced to think about things like illness, death, how we treat people who are different, what rules apply to people from different places and at different ages, etc.

I wouldn’t say it eile eye-opening, but at the same time it was definitely thought provoking. The hardest part for me was the ending which I will not give away. I was choked up when I tried to put myself in the place of Momo, and my mother in the place of Madame Rosa even though she is not Momo’s mother. It made me wonder what I would do ekile or differently. Jun 18, Trina rated it really liked it. It’s a novella-sized story of a young Muslim boy, son of a prostitute, brought up by an eoi Jewish former prostitute named Madame Rosa, who takes in other prostitutes’ children to support herself and them.

A french film called Madame Rosa starred E,ile Signoret. It’s a coming-of-age time for Deevant in the multicultural suburb of Paris called Belleville. But he never abandons Mme Rosa who is dying. Fascinating to hear Momo’s young point of view on old people, prostitutes, turning tricks, thievery and his general outlook on life.

Perhaps I had overly high expectations for this book as it was a good friend’s favorite book of all time.

I was just never really drawn into this book. The 1st person voice just didn’t really seem fully believable to me. Perhaps the problem was the translation. Feb 19, Ingrid rated it it was amazing.
